Growing plants in a raised bed is easy and a great way to introduce children to gardening!

Prepare your garden site

Find a level, sunny spot and dig up and remove any grass or weeds. Then, loosen the soil below to a depth of 8-12 inches so plants will have room to grow deep roots. An easier way to prepare the bed is to add a layer of newspaper or cardboard over the grassy area. Thoroughly wet the covering material, which will eventually disintegrate after smothering the grass.

Or build your raised bed structure

You can purchase kits that come with pre-cut lumber and hardware or build your own using rot-resistant lumber, like redwood or cedar (but avoid pressure-treated lumber). Keeping your bed under 4 feet wide will make planting, digging, and weeding easier. Visit for more tips and creative ideas.

Fill your raised bed garden with soil and add plant seeds
Fill your bed to the top and rake it out so the mix is evenly distributed. (The soil will eventually settle.) You’re now ready to plant seeds and seedlings in the highest quality organic soil made for your raised bed garden!
