Fish bone meal is a natural byproduct of the fishing industry, we make use of this "waste" material, as plant food, that would otherwise be discarded. It is made by dehydrating and grinding the bones into meal and helps improve soil structure and fertility by adding organic matter, which enhances water retention, aeration, and microbial activity in the soil. Coast of Maine Fish Bone Meal is preservative-free and is used instead of traditional steamed bone meal in all of our fertilizer blends.

For great results outdoors, apply in the spring after the weather warms. Because phosphorus moves slowly through the soil, it’s important to work it in well as it is needed by the roots. You can increase the effectiveness of Fish Bone Meal by mixing in other organic materials such as compost. Water it in after applying. One pound equals 4 cups.

When Planting Bulbs
Add 1 tablespoon per planting hole for medium-sized bulbs and mix with the soil.

For Vegetable Gardens
Use 8-10 pounds per 100 square feet and mix into the top 3” of soil.

For Use in Containers
When using a 1 gallon pot size or less, add 1-2 tablespoon per planting hole. For holes larger than 1 gallon, add 1/2-1 cup per planting hole. Mix into the soil and water-in after planting.

Outdoor Container Gardens
Mix 1/2-1 cup into 1 cubic foot of potting soil.

Trees and Shrubs
Use 1 pound per 2 inches of trunk diameter around the drip line of the tree once yearly. Rake it into the soil.

For best results be sure the fertilizer is in direct contact with the soil. Do not apply near water, storm drains, or drainage ditches. Do not apply if heavy rain is expected. Apply this product only to your lawn/garden and sweep any product that lands on the driveway, sidewalk, or street, back onto your lawn/garden.

Warning about attracting animals?? Maybe add a note to FAQ on the website?? Attracted to the fish bone meal as its used in dog foods as well. Also skunks and raccoons in surburban areas?

For great results outdoors, apply as early in the spring as possible after the last frost. Because phosphorus moves slowly through the soil, it’s important to work it in well, as it is needed by the roots. You can increase the effectiveness of Fish Bone Meal by mixing in other organic materials such as compost, we recommend using one of the Coast of Maine product suggestions below. Water-in after applying. One pound equals 4 cups.

When Planting New Bulbs
Add 1 tablespoon per planting hole for medium-sized bulbs and mix with the soil. Mix with Coast of Maine Quoddy Blend Lobster & Crab Compost Blend or Coast of Maine Planting Soil for Roses & Flowers for best results.

For Vegetable Gardens
Use 4 pounds (16 cups) per 50 square feet and mix into the top 3” of soil. Mix with Coast of Maine Quoddy Blend Lobster & Crab Compost Blend or Coast of Maine Planting Soil for Tomato & Vegetables for best results. (Using 4lbs based on weight...need to update is keeping 3lbs)

For New Houseplants
When using a 1 gallon pot size or less, add 1 tablespoon per pot. For pots larger than 1 gallon, add 2 tablespoons per pot. Mix into the soil, we recommend Coast of Maine Cape Neddick Blend Houseplant Mix for best results, and water-in after planting. (Lobster Meal refernces 2 tablespoons per 1 gallon, should these be the same?)

For New Container Gardens
Use 1/2 cup per 1 cubic foot of potting soil and mix into soil and water-in after planting. Use Coast of Maine Bar Harbor Blend for best results. (Is the 1/2 cup measurement correct here? Doesn't make sense with the other directions.)

Trees and Shrubs
Use 1 pound per 2 inches of trunk diameter around the drip line of the tree once yearly. Rake it into the soil and water-in after planting. Mix with Coast of Maine Penobscot Blend for best results.

Top-dressing Established Beds and Gardens
Combine 1 pound (or 3 cups) of plant food and 1 cubic foot of any compost-based medium. We recommend Coast of Maine Quoddy Lobster & Crab Compost Blend or Coast of Maine Castine Raised Bed Mix for best results

Apply 1 cubic foot of compost/fertilizer mix per every 10 square feet of garden as early in the season as possible after the last freeze. If your soil is already amended with compost, simply apply plant food at the same rate of 1 pound (3 cups) per 10 square feet of garden, again as early in the season as possible. Apply again in mid-season if needed. Water-in after each application. (taken from Stongington, need to check measurement ratios here.)
